First emerging in the 1820s, mass-produced publishers’ cloth bindings reached its zenith in the late 19th century with the introduction of the pictorial cover. Learn about the work of some of the women artists who designed such book bindings between 1890 and 1920.
Throughout the year 2022, the State Library of Pennsylvania is showcasing items from Rare Collections with a series of virtual programs that highlight these rare and unique books, documents, and maps! Join State Library Rare Collections Librarian Michael Lear as he delves into the history behind the amazing works by, for, and about Pennsylvanians that are protected within in the Vaults of the State Library. Each session will teach participants more about the history of our great commonwealth!
