Three courses are available this year.  Please only register for one as they will all be offered at the same time.

Beyond Booklists: Serving today’s Diverse Teens

In this YALSA online course, find out how to go Beyond Booklists to serve today’s teens, the most diverse generation ever. Participants will learn about available tools to help them identify the diverse teen populations in their service area and explore ways to design, implement and evaluate more in-depth services and programs for the diverse teen population and recent teen immigrants. Participants will also gain skills in addressing issues such as language barriers, cultural differences, and institutional support. The instructor will be Jennifer Velasquez

Power Programming

This course is designed for library staff members who want to learn about new ways to bring more teens into their school or public library with up-to-date programs. The course will cover several types of programming and related elements, including: simple self-running contests, reading celebrations, community partnerships and teen advisory boards. Participants will learn how to develop and implement relevant programming ideas and tailor them to work at their facility. This is the same course that was offered last year.  The Instructor will be Hayden Bass.

Power Up with Print and Ebooks

Get more teens reading! Young adult literature is a rapidly growing field and keeping up with the latest in YA literature can be challenging. Through this course students will learn about key young adult authors and books, and will learn how to evaluate and select materials in a range of formats. Students will also explore how to best utilize the YALSA book awards to meet the needs of their young adult community. In addition, students will learn about the important role young adult librarians play in their library and will learn how to create a vision for providing excellent service to the young adult population.  The instructor will be Valerie Davis.

What you need to know before registering

Dates:   Course begins week of September 8 and finishes week of September 28, 2015

Time commitment:   The courses takes place over four weeks.  Please be sure you have at least 2.5 hours to devote to the class each week.  You do the work when you have time.  There is no one time you must be online, but you musts be online sometime each week.

Cost:  Free (to you), but there are a limited number of spaces available.  Please be sure you have time to devote to the course each week.
