Supporting Early Readers
Date: Tuesday, August 29
Time: 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Presenter: Susan B. Neuman, Professor of Childhood and Literacy Education, New York University
How: Zoom Webinar
Public libraries are known for helping young children get ready to read through traditional storytimes and other early literacy programming. But what about new readers? This webinar will identify ways public library staff can support families and caregivers with emergent readers (ages 5-8) as they move from pre-reading to reading.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify the critical skills children will need in order to become successful readers
- Describe ways in which librarians can best support interested and engaged young readers
- Effectively communicate with families about the science of reading and how they might best support their young children.
A recording will be made available via the PA Library Staff Academy.
Supporting Early Readers will be presented by world-renowned language expert, Dr. Susan B. Neuman. Dr. Neuman is a specialist in early literacy development whose research and teaching interests include early childhood policy, curriculum, and early reading instruction for children who live in poverty. In her role as the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, Neuman established the Early Reading First program, developed the Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Program, and was responsible for all activities in Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Act.
