Partner Profile:  GIANT Food Stores has been known for being a great place to work, a great place to shop, and a great neighbor for more than 90 years. Since its humble beginnings as a meat market in 1923 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, GIANT has grown into one of the leading supermarket operations in the United States, with nearly 200 grocery stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia operating under the names of GIANT and MARTIN’S Food Markets. Resources for Libraries?  GIANT Food Stores is committed to providing health and wellness resources to help their customers shop, cook, and eat well. Throughout the stores there are call-out products that meet the FDA’s strict criteria with the Healthy Ideas shelf tag.

Passport to Nutrition kits are also available by ordering online. Passport to Nutrition is an interactive program that teaches kids about eating right and staying active through fun and engaging lessons, activities and experiments.

Nutritionists are available in Central PA and the Philadelphia area to assist customers with questions on healthy eating while they shop, provide one-on-one nutrition consultations, and teach health-related classes.

Savory magazine is available in-store for customers, and online with cooking videos, recipes, and health-related materials.

Which Literacy and Why:  GIANT’s approach to Health Literacy is to work with community members through good health.

Why Libraries?  GIANT Food Stores want to be part of the conversation about health and its goals align with those of libraries. They understand that libraries are one of the great cornerstones of a well informed community.
